WHAT I DO
I’m a freelance writer, editor, and content professional. I’m the editor of ASJA Magazine, the membership publication for the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and I regularly contribute to local and national publications and websites. JOURNALISM
My client list includes writing about local business for the Charleston Regional Business Journal, fashion for The Charlotte Observer, farming and gardening for The Progressive Farmer and Urban Farm, food, dining, and cooking for Charlotte Magazine and Zagat, green beauty and sustainable living for Breathe, interior design and home style for Charlotte Home & Garden and Charleston Home, weddings for Charlotte Wedding, travel for Where, personal essays for skirt!, parenting for Charlotte Parent, and more profiles than I can count.
I’m a generalist and love writing about just about anything, but I’m happiest writing about a few main topics: people (I love a great profile!), sustainable/green living, gardening, food, dining, and cooking, organic beauty, women’s issues, parenting, travel, and homes/interior design.
CONTENT MARKETING
For almost two years, I’ve led the production of content for the blog at Trulia.com. I’ve also written for brands including StyleSeat, Beautorium, Living Social, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and more.
MARKETING + COMMUNICATIONS
I also have experience in traditional marketing, public relations, social media marketing, and communications through my work with nonprofit organizations (Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont), event planning and promotion (skirt! Magazine), and SEO-first web content.
TEACHING
I have taught a course on the business of freelance writing for multiple semesters at Central Piedmont Community College, the largest community college in the U.S. I have also given writing workshops, served on panels about freelance writing, and spoken to writing classes about what I do. (I’d love to come speak to your group! Email me to hash out the details.)
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
I spent three years as the PR & Marketing Chair for Circle de Luz, a nonprofit organization that radically empowers young Latinas through extensive mentoring, holistic programming, and scholarship funds for further education. Among my other volunteer and fundraising efforts for this organization, I’m most proud of leading the process of creating a new, branded website, and contributing to the creation of professional marketing materials that will help launch this fledgling (and growing!) organization into its next phase.
PERSONAL
I have a passion for travel and culture, food, lapidary (gemcutting!), and green beauty (proof: my hobby blog, Indigo + Canary, has been featured in Health and All You). I love reading and writing, cooking and dining, gardening, hiking, traveling, and helping other writers succeed.
